MANCHESTER UNITED'S LACK OF AMBITION TO COST THE CLUB YET AGAIN ?

Three points registered out of the first nine points that were available at the start of the season. When sentences such as these are uttered in regards to how a certain team started the season, a team such as West Brom, Fulham, or Sheffield United might be expected to be found in the category of teams who have started the season in such a tough way.

To be clear, the above statement is in no way trying to classifying West Brom, Fulham, or Sheffield United as a team who rightfully should be at the bottom of the table but simply to point out that these teams have been so unfortunate to find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League table because these clubs have done a decent job with summer recruitments and a decent job at preparing themselves to start the season. However, one club whom the same cannot be said in terms of just how halfheartedly the club have set themselves to start the season is Manchester United.

Here is a fact that Manchester United failed to address before setting their targets during this past 2020 summer transfer window, Manchester United are not the superclub that they were once regarded as. From the evidence of what has transpired during this 2020 summer transfer window, Manchester United stepped into the summer transfer window with the idea that they still held the reputation of a super club who can still gain success easily on the pitch and as a result, the expectation carried by the reputation for success on the field will easily lead to successful negotiations of the pitch at any point in time.

Based on past reputation, the Red Devils evidentially expected to come into the transfer with a prestigious history expecting to place any price on the table and walk away with any signings on the sole basis of the prestigious history of the club. At the end of the 2020 summer transfer window, the one talking point which proved to be category conclusive this past summer transfer window especially in Manchester United’s case is that history and prestige can only get %10 of the way but the rest of the job with precise, cutthroat business when dealing in today’s European transfer window.

Will the addition of players such as Jadon Sancho and Ousman Dembele, two players who were both expected to arrive at Old Trafford this past summer, have boosted Manchester United’s goal of becoming Premier League and UEFA Champions League champions even higher next season? Absolutely! But only if Manchester United had actually completed the acquisition for these two players who could fill the gaps in quality in certain positions such as the right-wing position and the center back position. Also, the intention and promise given by the vice-chairman of Manchester United football club ED Woodward which was to keep building Manchester United into a team that can deliver trophies on the pitch would have been delivered only if Manchester United managed not to subtract any main player from their current squad this past summer.

However, as we already witnessed during the conclusion of the 2020 summer, Manchester United failed to meet both promises fully by not only failing to add players who will fill the positions that need more quality in the current Manchester United squad but also the decision to trim down the current squad by letting players whom could add some level of dept to the current Manchester United squad at least until the summer of 2021 might be a decision that might prove regrettable for the Red Devil come to the end of the 2021 season.

In all honesty, a fair measure of credit should be given to Ed Woodward, the Glazers, and the all-round board of directors in control at the helm of Manchester United football club. The Red Devils handled the general business conducted by the club during the duration of the 2020 summer transfer window very poorly in the early part of the 2020 summer season. Manchester United, unfortunately, sat back and watched opportunities to sign top-notch players such as Thomas ParteyDayort Opparmacano, and of cause Jadon Sancho all slip through the club's fingers all because of the consistent reason of lack of sufficient funds this past 2020 summer season. Manchester United was able to secure two additional signings in the form of Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, Brazilian full-back Alex Telles, Facundo Pallistri, and Amad Dialo (Dialo will be joining Manchester United from Atlanta BC on January 2021).

Truth be told, Manchester United supporters are reportedly still in some level of discomfort after observing the football club which the Manchester United fans wholeheartedly support pass through yet another transfer window where none of the players marked down by Manchester United football club as the main targets to bring into Manchester United football club this past 2020 summer season were acquired. Looking at the transfer window from that perspective, it’s quite understandable why Manchester United fans will feel aggrieved with how Manchester United have ended the summer transfer window. But the clear goal this past summer transfer window was to fill the holes in certain positions across the current Manchester United team that needed attention and, in that respect, the club appears to have completed that task this past summer with the new signings made.

The quality of the new signings might not all be considered high pedigree but the jury is still yet to decide on just how effective the new signings will be in terms of lifting Manchester United to a higher standard this season and in subsequent seasons after.
