MANCHESTER UNITED'S DECEMBER TO PLAY A CRUCIAL PART IN THIS SEASONS OUTCOME
December is here and for most fans who enjoy celebrating the holidays, December is a time for gift giving, warm smiles, giving hugs and spreading joy to people around us. However, even though December does spread joy to a lot of Manchester United managers, Manchester United players and Manchester United fans individually, as a whole, history has shown that Manchester United have been known to experience a difficult, some would say stressful, match schedules during the Christmas period.
The 2017 December period was a typical example of a difficult period that might have played a factor as to why Manchester United conceded to defeat in the race for last seasons Premier League Trophy. Defeats at the hands of Manchester City and draws against teams such as Southampton, Burnley, and Leicester City proved too deep a hole for Manchester United to overcome by the end of the 2017/2018 Premier League season. Here is the thing with the December period for Manchester United, the team always seem to hit a wall in their level of production during December. That is a simple fact. Ever since the past two seasons at least, the December period has been such a massive roadblock for Manchester United to overcome that as a fan, you instinctively start to cringe a little at the thought of seeing Manchester United lose pace with the team at the top of the Premier League table. The thought of Manchester United dropping points in December has become such a part of Manchester United that either no one questions why this constant anomaly remains present at Manchester United despite any improvements made to the club. Changes such as change of manager or staying active in the transfer window, whatever changes Manchester United has made in the last 2 – 3 season appears incapable of breaking Manchester United’s December misfortunes.
Talking about the
importance of the December schedule is not usually a huge topic of
discussion for Manchester United. The red devils have made an easy feast out of
making their way to the top of the Premier League table at this point in the
past which made Manchester United race to the pinnacle of the Premier League
table much easy as the end of the season approaches. To be fair to Mourinho ’s
troops, the Premier League cannot be categorized on the same level of
difficulty the Premier once was in the past. Teams competing in the modern day
premier league are much more eager to succeed and the modern day “small clubs”
of today's Premier League lack the fear factor that most clubs have when facing
the modern day Manchester United team. In other words, while Manchester United
prepare to face off against beatable teams this December 2018 period, Jose
Mourinho’s men must remember how vital all 3 points from each match played this
December is to the team. No team should be taken for guaranteed.
Surely the idea of no team taken for granted should have mounted itself permanently on the minds of each and every Manchester United players after the abysmal display Manchester United put up in front of their crowd at Old Trafford this ongoing 2018-2019 season. Excuses have been made for some of Manchester United's disappointing performances that resulted in the Red Devils dropping points to worthy adversaries such as Tottenham, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
However, serious questions have to be asked of Jose Mourinho and his players when teams such Brighton, Wolves, West Ham, and Crystal Palace have successfully taken crucial points out of the supposedly superior Manchester United team. Just what exactly is happening at Old Trafford? During the course of the past two months or so a noticeable number of important people such as David Beckham, Sir Bobby Charlton, and Executive Vise-Chairman Ed Woodward have made appearances to a few of the matches Manchester United have played so far this season. The recent presence of such high profile names during recent matches involving Manchester United undoubtedly projects signs of possible discomfort within Manchester United Board Members in regards to the manner in which Manchester United is being handled at the moment.
Manchester United have already shown levels of uncertainty towards succeeding this season with the number of unbearable points the team has dropped with the first half of the season reaching the summit. The relevant question to ask now is: How many more points can Manchester United throw away before Jose Mourinho and his men, consequently, throw away a place in the top four in this seasons Premier League table. Something has to happen in other for Manchester United to rediscover their best form next season and some sources are starting to suggest that come to the end of 2018- 2010 season, Manchester United might look to reshuffle the current team a little bit through either a change in Manager or a change in some the players in the team. Talks of remodeling the Manchester United team into a Trophy-worthy team will have to be pushed aside to be dealt with at the end of the season and towards the critical 2019 summer transfer window. Returning to current issue facing Jose Mourinho, in other for Manchester United to have a realistic chance of ending this 2018- 2019 Premier League season in the top 4, Manchester United have to end their remaining matches scheduled for the month of December with at least 19 accumulated points to hold any hope of breaking into any of the top positions in the Premier League table.
In conclusion, December is usually a month that signifies good things happening to individuals. Christmas, Hanukah, all celebration held in December that points towards more positive actions to be pursued in the next year. With the teams Manchester United are about to face this December, Jose Mourinho has to look at the matches for the month as a massive opportunity to climb higher up the Premier League table. An opportunity the team simply cannot pace by. Last week after the draw to Crystal Palace, the comments coming from Manchester United should suggest that the team is aware that Manchester United is not performing up to the clubs standards. “It’s a bad result, a really bad result. We lost the objective which was to use this eight matches up till the end of December to recover positions, to shot distances, to get close to the top four and in the end we lose two points. So later, Chelsea play Tottenham so we are not going to win points in relation to this two problems.”
(Jose Mourinho, MUTV. 24 Nov 2018)
“I think we need to keep working hard as a team on creating those chances and normally finishing them and making sure that the games that we dominate we win. I felt in the last ten minutes there was added intensity that we maybe needed a bit earlier in the game but we needed that a bit earlier in the game.” (Chris Smalling, MUTV. 24 Nov 2018)
The good news for Manchester United is that there is an awareness of the problems facing the team but the next question is: when are Manchester United going to solve these problems? The season is almost at the mid-way point which leaves Manchester United little room to convert from their current fallout performances to playing stellar football and getting stellar results. Time is running out on Manchester United and the gate to one of the Premier League tables top four spots is closing. If Manchester United want to lock up a top four spot, the team cannot afford any more losses at least for this entire month of December.
