MANCHESTER UNITED ATTRACTS INTERESTING COMMENTS FROM RETIRED CAPTAIN

“One extra center back, one extra left-back, a couple of extra midfielders and a striker or a forward.”

  (Garry Neville. SkySports.UK. Nov 11, 2019)

Those were just parts of the comments received from ex-Manchester United full-back Garry Nevile as the retired captain gave his opinion on the major avenues Manchester United need to take during the 2020 January transfer window. Garry Neville made a name for himself at Manchester United during his time as captain of the club not just for his remarkable defensive quality on the field but also because of Neville's firey, outspoken, attitude as one of the leaders in the team.

Eight years after hanging up his boot as a Manchester United player and recent evidence displayed through Nevilles' recent interview points to the idea that Garry Nevile currently still retains that feisty, outspoken, passion of pushing Manchester United to succeed. While Garry Nevile has made a little habit of making statements that might be considered controversial towards Manchester United Nevilles recent comments appear to be anything but controversial. While the idea of Manchester United being the centerpiece of conversations surrounding English football might not be what makes Garry Nevile's statements so interesting because let’s face facts when has Manchester United never been at the center of controversial statements and rumors concerning modern football? No! What makes Garry Nevel's recent statement so interesting is that this time the ex-Manchester United captain might have actually hit home with his statement. Manchester United is a team that had been known to be a strong, well rounded, unit in the defensive side of the pitch, in the creative side of the pitch and in the offensive end of the pitch.

However, evidence from the Manchester United's team performance in the past five years at least has cast Manchester United as a team lacking top quality frequently on three major parts of field offense, central midfield, and central defense. With the January transfer window around the corner Garry Neville's comments might sound unnecessary as we are yet to make our way into December, what Garry Nevile has done is remind the clubs Board of Directors early of the main necessities Manchester United needs to improve this season if the club is truly intent on ending the current season strongly as well as preparing for a better outcome next season.

Quite an impressive, early, move from the retired Manchester United captain but what outcome will the action yield? While the intended result might be to push the Manchester United Board of Directors into signing necessary players during January 2020, Manchester United board od directors have never been known as the men and women who yield under pressure coming from the media or any other source.

After all, this certainly not the first roller coaster of demands and accusations the Manchester United board of directors have found themselves entangled in. during the summer of 2018, under the managerial period of Jose Mourinho, Vice Chairman Ed Woodward and the rest of the Manchester United board of directors had been involved in countless rumours as well as received numerous accusation of the board of directors purpose of cutting cost which effectively leaves more money in the pockets of the wealthy men and women holding various positions in Manchester United's board room. Returning to Garry Neville's point of Manchester United's need to strengthen parts of the current squad there is some truth to Garry Nevile's comments. However, the point must be made that not all Garry Nevile's statements are accurate and upon recent evidence from comments made from a major representative from the board of directors, Manchester United are open to spending money in the transfer window but only if the right player whom can play in positions that need improvement becomes available.

Careful observation of the current Manchester United squad will show signs that the club might still be lacking a little more in the certain department which might suggest that the Manchester United board of directors might consider signing players that can play certain positions such as Center back positions( in terms of having an extra center back in the possibility of an injury occurring during mid-season) and signing one more center midfielder in the month of January 2020 are possible positions within the Manchester United team that needs improvement. However, improving these positions is not a situation that necessarily calls for massive amounts of money to be spent this January. Manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer has already proven this season that Manchester United does have some talented players ready to come into Manchester United first team and perform remarkably well as first-team players.

With the thought of more youth players graduating into the senior team in the future, the idea of spending less in the transfer window and promoting more youth player might play a major role in the stance made by the Board of Directors during the January transfer window and if that is the case then spending little to no money in January for the purpose of giving talented youth players within the Manchester United youth team makes some sense and judging from recent evidence from the performance of recently promoted players, supporting the managers clear plan of promoting youth players over buying new players might be Manchester United's plan moving forward into the future.

Make no mistake about the situation, Garry Nevilles comments about how Manchester United needs to dive into the January transfer window with the goal of signing players is relevant but the recognition of current talent within Manchester United's senior team and Manchester United's youth team and the awareness to avoid overlooking these talented players is the aspect were Gary Nevilles comments might have gone array.

While the recent news surrounding Manchester United and the upcoming 2020 January transfer window continues to paint Manchester United as a club ready to sign a couple of players in January, there is yet to be definitive evidence to suggest Manchester United will sign any new players in January. At least not at the moment.
