MANCHESTER UNITED POSSIBLY THREW IN THE TOWEL A LITTLE TOO EARLY IN REGARDS TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE TOP FOUR

Balance! such a rare word heard from football managers in recent times. “not good enough”, “must do better”, “satisfied with the performance of the team today.”

These are just some of the words Manchester United supporters have grown accustomed to hearing from their managers in the past five years. Words can be forgotten but the possibility of moving past words depends on just how irrelevant the word is in the context it is used in.

The last two managers of Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho each personalized the words “process” and “ need players to believe” which seemed to paint Manchester United as a team struggling to improve in quality on the field under both managers and in all honesty under these two managers Manchester United had embodied traits of a team seriously lacking in quality. However, when a manager mixes the idea of Balance with his own teams performance just as manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer has hinted this past Sunday, questions of what level mentality the Manchester United team might be operating with for the current season might just begin to pop up in the minds of football lovers and most especially in the minds of Manchester United's fans worldwide

History has proven on several occasions that a balanced team who have their minds set on what type of football the team decides to play with for the entire season most likely finishes the season picking up a spot in one of the top 4 spots of the Premier League table. With that being said and considering the fact that Solskjaer  has already put to bed the idea of Manchester United becoming a top 4 team with his quotes of Manchester United having “No chance” of securing a spot in the top four in the Premier League table during a recent press conference, the big question during the midway point of the season with Manchester United currently sitting in 7th place, nine points away from the top four spots in the Premier League table – Has Ole Gunner Solskjaer inadvertently thrown in the towel too early?

Sheffield United and Aston Villa are the next two matches on the schedule before the next wave of two difficult matches against Tottenham and Manchester City emerges on Manchester United within the next month. With Manchester United currently 9 points adrift of 4th place team Manchester City and 10 points adrift of 3rd place team Chelsea the expectation is that Manchester United will be looking at the upcoming match against Sheffield and Aston Villa as must-win opportunities to head into the encounters against Tottenham and Manchester City with high confidence and high hopes of getting points against both big teams to keep the slender possibility of making the top four of the Premier League table alive come end of the season.

Returning to Ole Gunner Solskjaers' point of balance within Manchester United's playing style this season, the idea of balance is indeed a very good topic of discussion especially concerning a manchester United team lacking dept in quality. While Manchester United fans will enjoy the idea of their Manchester United team always being in attack mode and taking the game to the opponent for the entire 90 minutes of a match, the recent injury crises experienced by team has determined that the Manchester United team currently lack the dept to keep injecting such high energy for an entire 90 minutes of a match.

So to Solskjaers point, a balance of knowing when to attack the opponent with pace and quality versus when to slow the game down and possibly play some defense is a skill Manchester United might adopt to avoid injury troubles for the rest of the season. As much as the issue of injuries has clearly affected Manchester United's ambition of finishing as one of the top four clubs in the Premier League table this season, the impact of injuries should not be misconstrued as the main reason for Manchester United's struggle this season. Yes there is no doubt that injuries played a factor this season, however, putting injuries to players as the main reason for Manchester United being unable to finish in the top four of the Premier League table will remove the spotlight in the bigger issue facing the team which is the lack of depth in quality found in the current Manchester United squad.

Analyzing the current Manchester United team will reveal a couple of answers such as one Manchester United has been running on adrenaline and not enough creativity and second the current Manchester United team has about four players in the team who can pick up the ball and create something out of nothing. With that being said, it`s easy for a manager to look at the low amount of creative players available plus the fact that the middle of the season is here and proclaim during press conferences in late October that Manchester United's chances of making the top is gone.

The month of November will play a very crucial in determining if Manchester United can finish in the top 4 of the Premier League table at least for the end of the year 2019. With the teams currently ahead of Manchester United in the Premier League table all scheduled to play one or  two tough games at a certain point in the current month of November and possibly December, the possibility of teams dropping points might still provide Manchester United with a slim chance of closing the gap on the top four teams.

Manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer has gotten good at making the right calls this season but his prediction of Manchester United's chances of making top four being over might be one prediction Solskjaer made a little too soon.  From the looks of Manchester United's recent form and taking into account the upcoming schedule regarding teams ahead of Manchester United in the Premier League table, suggesting Manchester United's top 4 dreams are over might be a suggestion Ole Gunner Solskjaer got wrong.
